CBD Helps Smokers Reduce Tobacco Use

Scientists increasingly acknowledge the benefits of the endocannabinoid system in nicotine addiction. They conducted a study with a blind placebo to see the impact of cannabidiol (CBD) in smokers who wanted to stop smoking. The 24 participants in the study, who participated, received an inhaler of CBD (n=12) or a placebo (n=12) for a week. They had to use the inhaler whenever they felt an urge for nicotine. 

The placebo smokers didn’t see a difference. However, those who received treatment with CBD reduced the number of cigarettes they smoked by 40%. According to these results, CBD can be a potential treatment for nicotine addiction, and scientists believe it deserves further exploration. 

 

Although cannabis has long been considered a “drug of abuse,” in recent years, an increasing number of studies published in the biomedical literature indicate that either the plant itself or some of its compounds may be of use in treating addictions. 

For example, a recent review sets out the current evidence on the involvement of the endocannabinoid system in modulating addictive behavior. By looking at the results of a research conducted with animals, on the potential role of some cannabinoids in treating psychostimulant addiction, scientists are hopeful that there might be a solution. There is evidence to indicate that pharmaceuticals that are CB2 receptor agonists may be of use in treating cocaine addiction. Other studies that have also been published show that cannabis may be a substitute for stronger drugs, including alcohol. 

Another recent academic review compiled several new studies focusing on the possible properties of CBD (cannabidiol) as an intervention for addictive disorders. 

Another study shows that although in the past cannabis has been associated with drug abuse, today CBD, derived from cannabis, helps battle drug abuse and harmful behavior, including life-threatening habits like smoking. 

CBD can also help you quit smoking marijuana. Another recent study, by the National Institute of Health proves that CBD can help with withdrawal symptoms from psychological and physical discomfort. 

The study included a four-week treatment with different dosages of CBD and a placebo. Those who dosed with CBD had a noticeable improvement in their experience with quitting marijuana. Those who received CBD reduced (significantly) their marijuana use.
